I use Windows filesharing and would like to stop one computer on my LAN from accessing anything but other computers on my local network- I do not want it to be able to access the internet.

Can anyone recommend how to do this?
I would like this to be something configured in Windows itself since I do not want all partitions on the computer to be unable to access the internet. Just one of them.

As previous answers have mentioned, you could configure a firewall rule in your router to block that computer from getting to the Internet.

If your router doesn’t have that functionality, you could configure that computer with bogus / fictitious DNS addresses. Of course, I would suggest using private IP addresses for this. You could log in the computer as administrator to make those changes, and then the person could have a plain user account, and even if they knew what was going on, they couldn’t make changes since it’s just a user account. That computer would still be able to see the Windows network, because Windows uses netBIOS for that.

I was wondering what classes in high school and college you need to take to be a computer security programmer, a regular programmer or a network security specialist.

Please help!

Thank you

The DVD to iPhone software has been flooding over the market this year, because the iPhone may be Apple’s most talked-about product, but on Tuesday Apple switches back its attention on its most dominant franchise: the iPod and the iTunes music and video store. No wonder a increasing flow of customers rush for iPod since last month, and naturally the need for a good DVD to iPod Video Converter also grows rapidly. Ironically, according to a survey, most people knows little how to convert DVD to iPod . That’s why those newly budding DVD to iPod software headed by PQDVD Software are so popular with US youngsters.

Wanna watch iPhone Movie? I bet it. Actually, among the changes announced to the iPod line, the most significant was to the iPod Touch, which is similar to the iPhonein form but lacks the calling features or monthly subscription plan. The new device will cost $229, a $70 price cut that should make the device more appealing to mainstream buyers and expose them to Apple’s App Store and its thousands of music, games and other programs. In fact, this mainstream of this target consumers virtually are obsessed with watching DVD on any handheld gadgets, more than merely in DVD to iPhone Conversion .That’s why DVD to Pocket PC Conversion Softwares are so popular this year. They wanna watch Movies on the go.

iPod Nano is nowhere behind the the iPhonelike iPod Touch, Yesterday, Mr. Jobs, Apple’s chief, unveiled new features and a svelte design for the iPod Nano, a cheaper, upgraded iPod Touch, and it’s undoutedly another buzzword for those hardcore fans of Free DVD to iPhone Rippers.

Buying a new computer can be a confusing process with all the different models out there. One thing that you will encounter when getting a new computer from one of the big retail chains is whether or not to buy their extended warranties. For a regular desktop pc I wouldn’t recommend the extended warranty. The reason being is that they already come with a one year manufacturer’s warranty which covers most hardware problems.

What they often don’t tell you is that their extended only covers hardware problems not software problems. Things like spyware and viruses are the most common problems that you will encounter with a new computer. If it is a hardware problem then it will be covered by the manufacturers warranty within the first year. With computers being so cheap these days you can just buy a new computer in a few years if yours takes a dive.

Save that money that you would have spent on the extended service plan and use it to transfer you old data to you new computer when and if your computer bites the dust. The big box retail chains make most of their money not from the computers but from the service plans and other junk they try to sell you on with a new computer. Check out my site www.love4computers.com and my blog www.love4computers.com/blog for more info on buying and maintaining your computer.

If you’re not savvy in the ways of computers it can be hard to choose the best computer repair service for your business. Hire a computer support service that cares about your business. Most small businesses need ongoing IT support; take time to ask potential service providers what makes them better.

You’ll feel an extra sense of security when your computer repair company knows your computer history and equipment. You work hard to develop relationships with your customers; make sure your computer repair service works hard to get to know your operation.

Consider these items when choosing a computer repair service. It’s an important decision. You want to be pro-active in taking measures to prevent a computer disaster that could cripple your business.

You want a computer service company that:

Applies Microsoft critical security updates at least once a month to workstations. The same updates should be applied once a week for servers. These actions prevent malicious programs from taking root, and create up to date security patches.

Reviews and manages your firewall, virus, and Spyware protection to assure your network is protected from the most recent attacks and viruses that may be spreading.

Manages your backup status. Data selection and data testing is critical to data recovery. Daily use of servers and workstations by office staff can create random network and security issues. Don’t wait until it’s too late!

Pro-actively standardizes and optimizes server and workstations to minimize problems, and speed up work flow and data transfer. Your staff will be able to find data faster and easier. Your computer system will perform more efficiently.

Helps you prevent storage issues and server crashers by managing your hard drive resources.

Will analyze your server event logs to identify issues before they create network and/or server problems.

You want your computer service professional to be exceptional. Do they offer phone support to help you figure out what’s wrong and how to fix the problem? Can they recommend products and assist you with purchases?

Proactive maintenance provides true peace of mind. Knowing that your computer repair service is regularly caring for your network saves you money and optimizes your computer capabilities. When you have a monthly service agreement (highly recommended) you’re able to manage your budget and minimize financial and technical surprises.

As you shop for computer support services, consider a local business. We all know what it’s like to feel like a faceless number to a large corporation. Your business deserves, and you can expect, someone who wants to do whatever it takes to make sure your computers support your business every day of the year.

When im in itunes i can get into my library but no ipod icon shows up so i cant add or delete songs on my ipod. What should i do?

First of all, check to see if both of the plugs are completely plugged in at both ends of the USB cable, if they are and it still isn’t working, try a soft reset, which means on the iPod touch, holding down the lock button until the red slider comes up and sliding that or with other iPod models, holding down the menu and ceter buttons. Hope I helped

I have 2 relatively new computers and i have no use for them and i was wondering if it was possible to connect them at the motherboard to make a really fast computer.

I’m a network engineer with 30 years of experience. The answer is YES. There are parts called blade servers that are designed in this way, but in your case, you are going to have to do it at the software level. Back when Windows NT first came out was a project called CONDOR, which was designed to share resources amoung networked computers.

The SETI project also has a screen saver that people can load on their computers that helps them calculate the search for signals from other worlds. This SETI program uses your CPU/Memory power and combines it with others from around the world. You can do the same thing with your OS, but first you are going to have to start with lots of research. The types of hardware you have, CPU, Memory, Mobo, etc. etc. Then get yourself the correct version of windows to support it. I’m afraid I can’t give you more information without those details. But I think I gave you enough to get started.

Good luck

iPod has already made traveling easier and millions of people are able to take advantage of the numerous uses the iPod gives us. People are able to carry music, photos, movies, and digital voice recordings anywhere we go. To add to these many uses traveling to foreign countries and learning a new language is now even simpler. There are several software packages available to iPod users that allow them to see and hear phrases in foreign languages.

IParrot is a multi-language translator that gives you translations of a variety of sentences so you can speak with others in different countries. By making use of the “Notes” feature, iParrot turns your iPod into a translator, language learner machine, dictionary, and encyclopedia. IParrot version 2.0 is compatible with the iPod Mini, iPod Nano and iPod Video. The program features text correction and improvement and pronunciation correction and improvement.

IParrot uses various categories that are organized into greetings, transportation, shopping, help, etc. Sentences are organized for instant access and ease of use. The iParrot is available in Chinese, English, Japanese, Russian, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Korean and Portugese. Users are able to read sentences directly off the screen.

ILingo is another language translation software that works with iPod as well. ILingo is also organized into categories for ease of use. These categories include greetings, shopping, getting directions and emergency. ILingo contains basic phrases for international travel. Each country is tailored and you are able to find any phrase you need in any country. ILingo also helps users learn proper pronunciation as the speaker pronounces each phrase for you properly. Practice your language while you are on the plane and you will be ready to go when you land.

Each translator comes with four hundred phrases in each language. Audio files have been created by native speakers so that pronunciation is correct. ILingo is compatible with iPods that have the dock connector on the bottom. It is not compatible with the iPod shuffle, or and iPod that has a wheel that physically moves or a direct FireWire connection on top. There are two versions of iLingo. ILingo Euro Pack features French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Russian. ILingo AsiaPack features Cantonese, Mandarin Chinese, Japanese and Korean.

Coolgorilla.com offers free iPod software. They have iPod translator phrasebooks with over 750 phrases that you can use while traveling in foreign countries. Each translator is divided into sections for traveling, socializing, emergencies, accommodations and a dictionary. Languages are provided by Lastminute.com and include German, French, Greek, and Spanish.

So as you can see the iPod is more than a cool toy for kids. It has some practical applications for business and the greater community. The benefits when traveling to a foreign country is obvious and imagine how much easier learning a new language is now going to be.

And no doubt as the iPod technology progresses even further and more uses of the iPod will become apparent. Eventually everyone will have one just like everyone now has a mobile phone.

A walk past the famed Paradise circle in Secunderabad into Parklane brings us to the de-facto personal computer and laptop accessories market, the Chenoy Trade Centre (or CTC as it is often referred to). This building was originally just like any regular commercial complex consisting mainly of clothing stores. Later in time it even became a residential complex. But soon it was back to what it started with – a commercial hub.

What can you look for…

This centre houses all computer peripherals that you can think of. No wonder then that it is even compared with the Lamington Road in Mumbai or Nehru Place in Delhi. The CTC has a poor cousin in the form of a few stores at the Gujarati Galli in Koti. But then nothing compares to this in the city.

The market started with sales only in hardware and assembled computers. Later on it even became the hub of pirated software till the dealers became authorised resellers. Now the complex is a one-stop-shop for new purchases, maintenance and repairs. In fact, if you don’t find a computer-related accessory at CTC, it probably is not available anywhere else in the city.

Tips for Shopping…

  • Most of the stores offer fair prices but bargaining is not a bad idea.
  • For software, buy from authorised dealers or buy hardware that comes bundled with software.
  • It is always good to plan a purchase and then visit this place. So do your research online or refer to any Indian computer magazine as dealer recommendations here are usually to push products on which their commissions are higher.
  • The market is closed on public holidays and Sundays, so schedule your visits for weekdays only.
  • Hindi, Telugu and English work with equal effectiveness so language should not be a problem.
  • Parking space is quite difficult to find for cars so be prepared to park near Paradise and get ready for the walk.
  • Ask for home installations for new PC purchases. For upgrades take your PC along with you for the best service.
  • Though most dealers accept credit cards they charge 2.5 % extra.
  • For refilling printer cartridges ask for a test print.
  • Ask for warranty and guarantee details.
